Turning adversity into action: How one South Australian is changing lives.
If you’ve ever been to Henley Beach over the summer you may have wondered about the long beach mat that starts at the boardwalk and reaches the sea.
This is an accessibility mat, allowing people on wheelchairs to enjoy the beach, and it’s an initiative of Accessible Beaches Australia, established by SA local and Push Mobility founder, Shane Hryhorec.
For Shane, it was lived experience that inspired him to develop products that would improve the lives of people with disabilities.
Shane’s life changed in an instant after an accident in a swimming pool left him with a broken neck and a spinal cord injury, where he quickly had to learn how to adapt to life with disability.
It was here that he realised the challenges faced day by day for people living with disability, and how critical equipment is in the quality of their lives.

“When I first had my disability and got my first wheelchair, it was not a great experience. I realised there needs to be more products out there for people that make them feel better about their disability and not disabled.”
Inspired and passionate about making a difference, Shane started Push Mobility, with the aim to provide products and equipment that enable people to engage with the community and reach their full potential.
With a warehouse in Port Adelaide, Push Mobility provides everything from wheelchairs to adventure bikes, paddleboard seats and accessories.
“We provide products that are the most elite in not just SA, but the world”, says Shane.
“Products that allow people to do more instead of just rolling around in a wheelchair. You can fly off a mountain if you want to!”

These products, along with initiatives like beach accessibility, are powerful steps in creating a more accessible and equitable society.
“What we’ve created today really has a big impact on people with disabilities, not just in SA but all around the country”, says Shane.
“The joy that you get seeing lives change by the products you provide is the reason we exist.”
