So what does it take to keep the modern world ticking? Enter QuantX Labs, an Adelaide-based specialist in precision timing. They use quantum technology to make the world’s most accurate clocks.

Can you imagine what would happen if all of those industries were disrupted? Thanks to QuantX, you probably don’t have to.

On a clear night you only need to look up to see one exciting use of their technology. Each of the GPS satellites we rely on for navigation is equipped with a clock, vital for timing and positioning. But these essential clocks can be vulnerable to interference, so QuantX developed a more secure and accurate one that “was recently launched on a SpaceX rocket. It’s now circulating 550 kilometres above our heads”.

Another critical use of their technology is in defence infrastructure.

Traditional radar sends out a signal that bounces off a target and returns to give real-time location information, but these signals are usually effective only to around 250km. QuantX’s technology creates incredibly pure radar signals that can travel much further and return more accurate data, greatly enhancing Australia’s national sovereignty and intelligence-gathering capabilities.

Based in North Terrace’s Lot Fourteen innovation precinct, QuantX is surrounded by like-minded businesses who routinely connect and collaborate. According to Andre, “we can go and talk to other businesses and they’re all willing to share. All that goodwill creates an incredible environment.”

South Australia is “a real ‘Goldilocks state’. It’s neither too big nor too small. It’s also got this manufacturing heritage and awareness of the importance of innovation that, you know, I didn’t experience elsewhere.”
