Micro-X

From the front lines in Ukraine to the sidelines of the NBA, South Australian business Micro-X is on a mission to make healthcare more accessible around the world.

Based at the Tonsley Innovation District, Micro-X designs and manufactures technology that makes X-ray machines smaller, lighter and portable – taking medical imaging beyond the walls of hospitals and clinics to where it’s needed.

One setting where their miniaturised products are already having an outsized impact is on the front lines in Ukraine. There are currently 29 mobile X-ray units being used to image citizens and combatants affected by the ongoing war.

According to Micro-X Chief Executive, Kingsley Hall, the weight of the Micro-X Rover Plus, at just 95 kilograms, means “it can come where the imaging is needed, rather than the other way around.” Through this role in an active warzone, Kingsley is seeing real proof that their products can deliver when it counts.

Another setting where you’re bound to see Micro-X is on the sidelines of professional sports leagues in the U.S. (including the NBA, NHL and Major League Baseball). When teams invest millions of dollars in star athletes, it’s vital that health information is delivered quickly and accurately. Mobile X-ray units give teams the new ability to access high-quality information in real time, so those athletes can be treated quickly and spend more time doing what they do best.

Kingsley is justifiably proud of Micro-X but is quick to share credit for their success with the unique collaborative environment they have at Tonsley: “We’re surrounded by 15 or 20 companies that are all trying to innovate like we are – we wouldn’t be anywhere else.”
