The Hygiene Co.

Having a strong home base is really key to become a national brand, and then also to become an export brand.

Manufacturing a cleaner future from South Australia

From its South Australian manufacturing facility, The Hygiene Co. is rethinking the humble wet wipe, creating plastic-free, Australian-made products with ambitions to take its business to the world.

Based in Woodville North, The Hygiene Co. was founded by Phil Scardigno and Corey White during the COVID-19 pandemic, when they saw an opportunity to strengthen local manufacturing while tackling the widespread use of plastic in disposable wet wipes.

Today, The Hygiene Co. produces plant-based wipes for commercial, retail and industrial applications alongside its two brands, CleanLIFE® and Great Aussie Wipes®.

For Phil, having a local foundation is key to the company’s growth.

Innovation sits at the heart of The Hygiene Co.’s vision.

What sets them apart is their passion for creating natural, plastic-free solutions without compromising on quality or performance.

In 2022, they began mass production of Australia’s first plastic-free wet wipes at its Adelaide facility and have since developed flushable technology, becoming the first Australian company to produce a certified flushable wet wipe.

For Corey, manufacturing locally delivers benefits well beyond the product itself.

“By manufacturing here, there’s just so many benefits. There’s an environmental reason, the simplicity of not shipping products too far, and the benefit of using Australian ingredients, rather than using imported synthetic ones.”

For the co-founders, South Australia is more than a place to manufacture. It’s a place to build a business, innovate and grow.

“That’s what South Australia is, I think – it’s us all supporting each other,” says Corey.

With a strong manufacturing base at home and its sights set on international markets, The Hygiene Co. is showing how a local business can turn an everyday product into an opportunity for innovation and sustainable growth.
