Celebrating 20 years of Australian Outdoor Living: A story of local pride and national success

Australian Outdoor Living (AOL) was founded in 2005 by Colin Kuchel with a simple but powerful vision: to create beautiful outdoor spaces where families could build lasting memories together. What began as a small business in Adelaide has now become a nationwide leader in the home improvement industry. While the company has grown, their core mission has remained unchanged – to help families enjoy more time outdoors, creating memories in the comfort of their backyards.
As a family-owned business with deep roots in South Australia, Australian Outdoor Living has remained committed to the community that helped fuel its growth. Whilst the company has expanded to offices across Perth, Sydney, Newcastle, Brisbane, Canberra and Melbourne, its pride in being South Australian has never wavered, with their head office, and one third of their team based in South Australia.
For Australian Outdoor Living, the State Brand represents more than just a logo – it’s a symbol of the company’s origins, its ongoing commitment to supporting the local economy, and its pride in the South Australian community.
“The passion, commitment and drive shown by our founding team in South Australia is a big reason as to why we are where we are, today. We recognise the power of South Australia - our founding South Australian team, and the local market, SA supporting SA”, says David Wegener, General Manager of SA Branch.
The State Brand plays a significant role in Australian Outdoor Living’s marketing strategy. You can find it featured on uniforms worn by employees, on brochures, flyers, signage, in their showrooms, and at their Royal Adelaide Show displays.
“Usage of the State Brand is a way of paying respect to our story and the community behind our brand.”
Supporting local businesses has always been a key value for Australian Outdoor Living. The company understands the importance of choosing local suppliers and contributing to the economic growth of South Australia. One example of this commitment is its connection to Universal Blind Assembly, an Adelaide-based manufacturer founded by Managing Director Colin Kuchel, allowing the company to keep production local. This ensures fast turnarounds, high-quality control, and the continued creation of local jobs, all while supporting the South Australian economy.
Even as Australian Outdoor Living has expanded across the country, it has remained true to its roots. AOL also supports the local community through sponsorships of the Adelaide and Monarto Zoo, Port Adelaide Football Club, Adelaide United, and charitable initiatives like the Variety Radiothon, which helps South Australian families in need. These efforts demonstrate the company’s ongoing commitment to giving back to the community that helped it grow.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of Australian Outdoor Living, a significant milestone for the company. To celebrate, special promotions and offers will be available throughout the year, allowing the company to thank its customers for their continued support.
Australian Outdoor Living’s journey from a small South Australian business to a national success story highlights the value of staying connected to local roots and the ongoing impact of supporting South Australian businesses. Through its use of the State Brand, Australian Outdoor Living continues to demonstrate that local pride and community support are the foundation for long-term success.
