Grundy’s Shoes: Proudly championing the State Brand in every step

Grundy's Shoes

Grundy’s Shoes is a proudly South Australian, family-owned business with over 157 years of history. With deep roots in the community and a commitment to quality and service, Grundy’s celebrates its heritage through the State Brand, supporting local jobs and proudly showcasing its identity across marketing, stores, and customer experiences.

With a legacy stretching back more than a century, Grundy’s Shoes is a testament to tradition, resilience, and South Australian pride. From its iconic store on Rundle Street, trading since 1896, to its presence in Glenelg and Victor Harbor, Grundy’s has remained a trusted name in SA.

Originally opened as H. Grundy and Co, the store became known as Grundy’s Shoes and has stood proudly in the same Rundle Street location for over 120 years. The Judd and Whittenbury families, already well established in the South Australian footwear industry since 1868, took over the business in 1921. They saw in Grundy’s an opportunity to connect more closely with the vibrant heart of Adelaide’s retail scene. The family name remained, along with a commitment to service and quality.

Through the decades, Grundy’s Shoes has grown alongside the state, expanding with stores in Glenelg and Victor Harbor, and evolving into a national online retailer.

As one of the oldest family-owned businesses in South Australia, Grundy’s Shoes is deeply embedded in the community. That made adopting and promoting the State Brand a natural step. “We’ve employed and served South Australians for generations,” says Tania Whittenbury, Brand and Content Manager at Grundy’s Shoes.

The State Brand features prominently in Grundy’s window displays, social media campaigns, and across a range of marketing initiatives. Whether it’s advertising on Adelaide Metro buses, appearing in publications like Fifty+ SA, or celebrating local events like Gather Round or the Adelaide 500, Grundy’s embraces the State Brand as a symbol of identity and pride.

“We take great pride in our state, our people, and what the State Brand represents,” Tania Whittenbury, Brand and Content Manager.

Grundy’s believes in the power of supporting local and the Buy SA. For SA. message. Citing the Family Business Association, Tania advises that over 50 percent of the workforce in Australia is employed by family businesses.

“Keeping profits, jobs, and opportunities in the state is important,” says Tania. “We’ve employed hundreds of South Australians over the years and are committed to doing so for many generations to come.”

Grundy's Shoes Family

While Grundy’s now reaches customers across the country, its roots remain deeply embedded in South Australian soil. The business continues to reflect the values of its home state, and commitment to quality, built over generations of serving local communities.

“We’ve been around long enough to see sons, daughters, parents, grandparents, and even great-grandparents come through our doors. That’s the kind of relationship we treasure.”

Now in its 157th year of operation, with the seventh generation now involved in the business, Grundy’s Shoes is more than a brand. It’s a family legacy, a piece of South Australian history, and a local success story that continues to grow.

“We’re a proud South Australian family-owned business and we’d love to see you in-store. Come in and say hello.”
